Here’s how you can install the Chrome browser extension:
- Click on this link to find the "Semrush AI Writer for Chrome” extension
- Open the extension and click “Add to Chrome”
- Make sure you are logged in to Semrush
How to Use the Semrush AI Writer for Chrome
Once you’ve installed and activated the extension, you can use it on any platform or website.
To start working, highlight the text you want to edit and click on the Semrush AI Writer icon.
You can use the tool to check grammar, improve language, rephrase text, or change the tone of voice.
The tool will also provide direct suggestions. For example, it will highlight complex sentences and offer to either simplify or ignore them:
Want to turn off the highlight feature? You can do this in one click in the extension settings or via the Turn Off button on the pop-up.
Additionally, to make working with texts easier, the Semrush AI Writer extension supports formatted content.
Everything you select will be processed, including links, lists, and images.
Whenever possible, the tool will preserve the text the way it was written, keeping words in bold or italics as they initially appeared.

The translation feature supports formatting but doesn’t consider specific preferences, such as brand voice or dialects.

If you want to implement a modification not offered in the widget, you can utilize the Custom request tool.
It enables you to input your own unique prompt, allowing AI to make a more precise alteration to the text that’s tailored to your needs.
Summarize or Rewrite an Article
You can also use the extension to summarize website content on any published web page.
You’ll see the extension's main button in the header of pages that have content such as news posts, blog posts, etc.
For this feature to work, the page should contain a single H1 header and more than 100 words of content (excluding sidebars, menus, ads, etc.).
From here, you can choose to summarize or rewrite the article.
Apply Brand Voices
You can also tailor your content to match specific Brand Voices previously created in the Content Toolkit.
By default, a generic voice for a wide audience is applied.
However, once start working with a piece of text, you can change the Brand Voice through the drop-down menu.
This adjustment will update the content and be remembered for all future rewrites.
You can also edit a Brand Voice or create a new one in the Content Toolkit.
To do so, click the “Brand Voice page” button at the bottom of the list.

How to Disable the Semrush AI Writer Icon
To globally disable the Semrush AI Writer icon from being displayed next to every H1 heading, use the toggle in the extension's main menu.
Then, click the icon near the URL in the extension's toolbar and turn off the toggle for quick text editing.
As an option, use the toggle to disable an extension on certain websites.
How to change the Preferred English dialect
To select your preferred English dialect, click on the Semrush AI Writer for Chrome icon in your browser's extensions area.
Next, open the Preferred English dropdown menu and choose from one of the five available dialects: American, British, Canadian, Australian, or Indian.
